Sibling Shots During Your In-Home Newborn Session: What Duluth Moms Need to Know
Sibling photos during newborn sessions don’t have to be perfect to be beautiful. Learn how to prepare your toddler and capture real, loving moments during your Duluth in-home newborn session.
TODDLERSIN-HOME SESSIONSLIFESTYLE NEWBORN SESSIONS

Let’s be honest—sibling shots during a newborn session can feel a little unpredictable. You’ve got a brand new baby, a toddler who’s suddenly been promoted to Big Brother or Sister, and a whole lot of feelings in the room. But here’s the truth I want you to hear loud and clear:
It doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.
Real Moments > Perfect Poses
As a mama myself (and someone who’s photographed plenty of wild toddler energy like in this session where I share my secrets for photographing toddlers), I fully expect the wiggles, the snack breaks, the “no, I don’t want to!” moments. And I welcome them.
What I’m looking for isn’t a perfect smile—it’s connection:
A quick forehead kiss
The way their little hand rests on baby’s blanket
That fleeting glance full of curiosity
Even the pouty lip (yes, really—it’s part of their story!)
These are the kinds of moments I cherish in every in-home newborn session
How I Help Things Flow
Here’s what you can expect during your session:
I never force it. If your older child isn’t feeling it, we pivot.
We start with siblings early—they’re usually more open when fresh and not “over it.”
Play-based prompts: peek-a-boo, snuggling under a blanket, or “helping” check on baby’s toes.
Short and sweet—most sibling photos happen in the first 15–20 minutes, because that’s the window we’ve got!
Preparing Big Siblings
A few gentle ways to help your older child feel included and loved:
Talk about the session ahead of time—how much fun we’re going to have!
Let them help pick their outfit—giving toddlers a little control goes a long way.
Keep expectations low. Some siblings want to snuggle close; others want to run circles around the living room. Both are okay.
Snacks. Bribes. Favorite toys. No judgment here. Let’s set them up for success.
