Having a baby brings a whirlwind of emotions—exhaustion, joy, awe, and maybe a little chaos too. Some days, just getting a shower and putting on pants feels like a major win. So the thought of loading your brand-new baby into the car, navigating car seats, spit-up, and unpredictable toddler moods to get to a studio? Yeah... no thank you.

That’s one of the many reasons I adore in-home lifestyle newborn sessions.

Stay home. Snuggle your baby. Let me come to you.

As a Minnesota newborn photographer based in Duluth (and a mama of two myself), I deeply understand what these early days are like. During your session, we’ll document the everyday beauty: diaper changes, cozy feedings, snuggles on the bed or couch, even a sibling popping in for a quick kiss before running off again. It’s all part of your story. My hope is that when you look back years from now, these images will bring you right back to this season with your tiny love.

Preparing for Your In-Home Newborn Session

What to Expect

Scheduling

We’ll pencil in a date about two weeks after your due date. That’s a great starting point—but I’m always flexible. Whether baby arrives early or later, we’ll adjust as needed.

Lifestyle newborn sessions work beautifully even if baby is a bit older. Whether your little one is two weeks or two months, there’s no pressure. We aren’t relying on props or sleepy poses—we’re capturing connection. If baby has some acne or scratches, no worries. I gently edit out anything temporary while keeping the sweet details like birthmarks and flakey skin—evidence of life in the womb.

Light is Everything

I use only natural light—no flashes or big gear. Soft window light is perfect for the cozy, dreamy feeling of these sessions. Before your session, we’ll talk about which rooms have the best light—usually the bedroom, living room, or nursery. If one space has great light, we can use that the whole time. One window is all we need.

Getting Your Home Ready

Declutter, Don’t Deep Clean

Your home doesn’t need to be spotless. Truly. Just tidy surfaces in the rooms we’ll use—like nightstands, countertops, and dressers. I can help shift things around when I arrive.

Let in the Light

Open curtains and blinds to let in natural light. I’ll turn off overhead lights for clean, natural tones.

Warm it Up (If It’s Cold Out)

If it’s chilly, bump up the heat a little to keep baby cozy—especially if we’re doing diaper-only snuggles.

Keep Bedding Simple

We often use the master bed, so try for neutral-toned bedding—whites, creams, or earth tones. Avoid bright colors or bold patterns, which can reflect on skin. If you love a quilt or heirloom blanket, let’s use it!

What to Wear

For Mama

Choose something comfy and flattering, like a flowy maxi dress. Soft fabrics that move well photograph beautifully. Pick your outfit first, then coordinate the rest of the family around it.

For Baby

Simple is best. A swaddle or just a diaper works great. I also bring a small collection of neutral, cozy newborn outfits you’re welcome to use.

For Dad

Soft neutral tones, rolled sleeves, linen or cotton. Skip logos, graphic tees, or hats.

For Siblings

Comfortable and neutral. Dresses, cozy knits, soft textures. Layers like cardigans add interest without distraction.

Color & Texture Tips

Stick to creams, browns, tans, and earth tones. These tones work well with my editing style and help keep the focus on emotion. Mix textures like knit, lace, or linen. Coordinate—not match. Bare feet are always welcome.

FAQs

How long does a session last? Usually around 2 hours, but we go at your baby’s pace. Feedings, diaper changes, toddler breaks—it’s all part of it.

What if my baby is fussy? It’s normal! I follow baby’s cues and capture the real-life moments in between.

What if my toddler won’t cooperate? Totally fine. I never expect perfection. We let them pop in and out, and I work with whatever they’re feeling.

My house doesn’t look like Pinterest... Good! These sessions are about love, not perfection. All we need is one well-lit corner and your connection.

Do you bring props? No props, just real life. I bring simple swaddles, knit outfits, and a Moses basket if you'd like to use it.

I feel awkward in photos. Will you help? Absolutely. I gently guide you into good light and positions, then let you interact naturally. The best moments unfold when you forget the camera is even there.
